MY NAME IS MS. DEBORAH.
That's what my little friends call me. I'm a speech-language pathologist.
I’m here to share some of the therapy techniques and resources that I use to teach children with autism spectrum disorders.
As a pediatric speech-language pathologist for more than 20 years I love working with children with communication disorders but since my son was diagnosed with autism about 14 years ago, I developed a niche in working with children with autism.
Through my own personal journey and collaboration with other SLPs, BCBAs, OTs and educators, I have learned a variety of ways to teach language skills.
Now I’m empowering you to do the same. For me, you child's development is personal!
I am a licensed speech-language pathologist from Texas, wife, and mom of 2 teenagers and a dog, Tyson. I provide speech therapy to children who have speech and language disorders.
Sixteen years ago my beautiful son was born. I will never forget the moment I held him in my arms for the first time. When he was about 16 months old, I noticed that he wasn't responding like my first born daughter. He wasn't responding to his name, his eye contact was low, and he was observed to rock back and forth while watching TV.
As a speech-language pathologist, I saw the red flags. His diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders was confirmed by a psychologist two months later.
I felt as though his future was cut short and my mind wandered aimlessly towards the future that hasn't even happened yet. After going through my grief and pity, slapping myself back into reality and lots of prayer, I decided to focus on what he needed most-his mother.

I followed his developmental pediatrician's advice as well as other therapists (i.e., OT, PT, BCBA).
I also decided to complete another master's degree in autism spectrum disorders to serve my son best because health insurance didn't cover services at the time.
My son has taught me to be a better therapist and to live life one day at a time.
Now I've turned my journey and experience with my son and my other children, my clients, as an opportunity to share different techniques/strategies that I have used to teach specific skills.
